Learn how to make foaming hand soap at home! With just a few simple ingredients and some foaming soap dispensers, you’ll have your own DIY liquid hand soap your skin will love. Who needs those expensive store-bought ones when homemade foaming hand soap is better in so many ways?

A hand holds a small amount of foamy soap over a wooden surface, next to a soap dispenser.

I love experimenting and crafting new recipes for body care products, and making my own hand soap is no exception! But while I’m a fan of regular soaps, I like using liquid ones now and then. It might initially sound tricky, but trust me — the process is really easy. With my foaming hand soap recipe, you’ll have a natural and effective hand soap that foams well with a scent blend that you’ll love and one that's gentle enough for kids, too!

Why You’ll Love This DIY Foaming Hand Soap Recipe

    • The instructions are really easy to follow, and you’ll have your own foaming hand soap in no time!
    • No need to buy new foaming hand soap dispensers! You can recycle and use any old Mason jars with a foaming pump lying around the house. It’s a great way to reduce plastic waste in the home!
    • This recipe uses lavender and chamomile, but you can customize it and use your favorite essential oils instead.
    • It’s free of harsh chemicals, unlike regular liquid soap.
    • You’ll end up with a foaming hand soap that feels soft and luxurious on your skin and smells really good, too!
    • You’ll save a few bucks as homemade soaps are less expensive than pricey store-bought ones.

    Ingredient Notes

Plain Castile Soap: Made up of plant-based oils like coconut, jojoba, and olive oil, liquid castile soap acts as a mild yet very effective cleaning agent in our foaming hand soap.

Carrier Oil Of Choice: Provides moisturizing, skin-conditioning benefits that help prevent drying your skin.

    • I like to use sweet almond oil for this recipe, but you can also use any carrier oil you love such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, or olive oil.

Vegetable Glycerin: Helps keep your skin hydrated even with repeated handwashing. It also helps give the soap a more luxurious lather.

Lavender and Chamomile Essential Oils: Give the hand soap a calming, relaxing scent and skin-soothing properties.

Distilled Water: Dilutes the soap mixture to easily flow through the foaming dispenser.

    Top Tips

    • Use distilled water as much as possible to ensure a longer shelf life for your hand soap. If using tap water, boil and cool it first to remove impurities and prevent bacteria growth.
    • Always use 100% pure essential oils to give your liquid soap the best scent and skin benefits.
    • Start by adding just a few drops of essential oil, then adjust the amount according to your personal preference.
    • In addition to lavender and chamomile, you can also use other essential oils, such as tea tree oil, peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary, bergamot, and citrus oils like lemon and sweet orange.
    • Avoid adding too much carrier oil to the soap mixture to keep it from feeling too greasy.
    • When reusing old foaming soap dispensers, wash and dry them first before refilling them with soap.
    • If you don’t have a foaming soap pump bottle, you can still use regular soap pumps, but it won't create foam.
    • As the ingredients may sometimes separate, give the foaming hand soap a gentle shake before using.

    Storage Tips

Store your foaming hand soap in a cool, dry place away from sunlight so it will retain its scent and quality. It should last for up to 3 months.

However, if you notice any change in smell, texture, or color, discard the foaming hand soap and make a new batch instead.
