Ingredient Notes
Sweet Almond Oil: Rich in vitamin E and fatty acids, it gives the lips a silky and moisturizing feel! If you don’t have almond oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, or olive oil can be used as substitutes.
Dried Chamomile Flowers: These flowers have soothing and anti-inflammatory properties that are perfect for remedying chapped lips. We’re using German chamomile for this recipe.
Raw Cocoa Butter: Adds a rich scent to the lip balm (without any synthetic fragrances) and aids in maintaining the hydration levels of your lips.
Beeswax: This provides intense hydration, locks in moisture, and gives texture to our lip balm. You can use either grated or pellets (yellow or white). Candelilla wax may be used as a substitute but in a smaller amount.
Hibiscus Powder: Adds a gorgeous rosy tint to our hibiscus lip balm thanks to its ruby-red color.
How to Make Tinted Lip Balm
- Start by infusing the sweet almond oil with the dried chamomile. You can infuse the oil quickly by placing the oil and flowers in a double boiler over low heat for 1-6 hours. Alternatively, you can steep the chamomile in the oil in a jar for at least three weeks.
- Once the oil is infused, strain the flowers and reserve the oil.
- Add the infused oil, cocoa butter, beeswax, and hibiscus powder in a double boiler over medium heat.
- Stir constantly while all melts and blends completely, which will take about 2 minutes.
- Once the ingredients are smooth and even color, pour the lip balm mixture into the containers or tubes of your choosing.
- Allow the lip balm to cool until completely set, usually at least 1 hour.
- Use and enjoy!
Top Tips
- Using a medicine syringe makes transferring the blend from the double boiler into your chosen container (like lip balm tubes) easier.
- Add peppermint essential oil if you want your balm to have a cooling sensation. Other essential oils, like orange and lavender, can also be added.
- If you want to use a natural preservative, add vitamin E (tocopherol), rosemary leaf extract, or rice bran extract. You may also swap cocoa butter for shea butter, both of which help protect the skin barrier.
- You can also swap the sweet almond oil for rosehip seed oil, hemp oil, grapeseed oil, or avocado oil. Please check if you have allergies to these ingredients first.
Storing Hibiscus Tinted Balm
Be sure to keep the caps of these tinted lip balms on at all times and store them in a cool, dry place. With proper storage, this balmy tint can last for at least a year!
