Why You Will Love This DIY

    • Easy to make: You only need six ingredients!
    • Effective: This lip scrub leaves your lips super soft and effectively removes dead skin cells.
    • Well-scented: This scrub uses the spices themselves in place of essential oils for the most natural way to exfoliate your lips.
    • Cost-effective: Natural, store-bought lip scrubs can be expensive when in reality you can make your own with few ingredients.

    Ingredient Notes

Pop over to your kitchen because everything you need to make this coconut sugar lip scrub is already there!

Coconut sugar: This sugar is perfect for lips because it’s not abrasive or coarse. This helps gently exfoliate and remove dry skin on your lips instead of roughing them up. If you do not have coconut sugar, you can use white sugar or brown sugar.

Spices: You’ll need ground nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves for the scrub. The finer the grind the better.

Carrier oil: Any oil will work but I use olive oil the most. Great alternatives are fractioned coconut oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, and sweet almond oil.

    Top Tips

Any carrier oil will work for the recipe but make sure that it doesn’t have a lingering flavor.

Likewise, do not use regular coconut oil (fractioned is ok) or the lip scrub will become much more solid once stored. Use fractioned coconut oil (which remains liquid at all temperatures) if you need to go with coconut.

Store the lip scrub in an airtight container in a cool dry place for up to 3 months.

When using it, make sure your hands are dry when you scoop out of the jar. If you get moisture into the jar, it won’t store as long.

    How To Gift It

A coconut sugar lip scrub makes a thoughtful gift to any friend or family member.

Make multiple batches and portion them out into small mason jars. Seal the jar and tie on a label with a note on what it is and instructions on how to use the scrub.

You could even include a mini spoon for scooping.

Gift this alone or as part of a larger self-care basket with items like orange clove body butter and calendula lip balm.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What do coconut oil and sugar do to your lips?

The blend of oil and finely ground sugar will help exfoliate the lips and remove dead skin. Gently massaging the mixture in will leave lips feeling soft and nourished.

Which sugar is best for scrubs?

This depends on which part of the body you’re using it on. The face and lips require very fine sugar (or finely ground sugar) as the skin is delicate. Anything too chunky will tear more than repair. The skin on your body is a bit tougher but you still want a sugar like coconut sugar that’s soft and dissolves well so as not to be too abrasive.

How long do you leave sugar scrub on your lips?

You’ll first want to massage it into your lips to remove any dry skin. From there, you can leave a scrub on your lips for 5-7 minutes for the oils to absorb. When you’re ready, gently rinse off the scrub with warm water and apply your favorite, nourishing lip balm.

What’s the best way to store DIY lip scrub?

You want to store homemade lip scrub in a sealed container in a cool, dark place. Take care when using it not to get any water into the container as it’ll cause the ingredients to go rancid. If stored properly, lip scrubs can last up to three months.
