    What Is A Milk Bath?

Milk baths are a common skincare practice that helps to soothe skin irritations and moisturize. These baths are typically made with whole milk as it’s said that the protein and fats in the milk are what help soften skin.

However, with more and more people intolerant to whey protein, coconut milk baths have become popular.

Coconut milk is high in fats, vitamin C, and copper which can leave your skin feeling unbelievably smooth.

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • Easy to make: Only 5 ingredients make up this recipe and you probably have them all in your pantry.
    • Soothing: The Epsom salts in this bath soak help your muscles release tension.
    • Fragrant: The whole bathroom will smell delicious with these natural scents
    • Smooth skin: The ingredients in this coconut milk bath were made to help your skin maintain its flexibility and reduce signs of aging.
    • Vegan: While traditional milk baths are made with dairy, this coconut milk bath makes the perfect cruelty-free and dairy-free alternative milk bath for vegans and those sensitive to dairy products.
    • A thoughtful gift: It’s easy to use this soak just on yourself but it also makes a thoughtful DIY gift for friends and neighbors!

    Ingredient Notes

Epsom salt: This classic bath salt has long been used to both relax, repair, and help tense muscles release. It’s the perfect addition to any soak because beyond that it also helps to reduce inflammation and soreness. If you’re feeling tight or stressed at the end of the day, Epsom salts can help.

Coconut milk powder: Great for anyone who is whey-intolerant, coconut milk is hydrating, and loaded with healthy fatty acids that do skin good. Not only does it help with the elasticity of your skin, but it also leaves it feeling unbelievably silky. I like to use organic coconut milk powder.

Oat flour: Oatmeal is a classic for helping soothe dry skin and itchy skin, and is even better for sensitive skin or those with irritated skin. That’s why I like to use it in this lavender facial powder to help calm and repair delicate tissue. It also has excellent cleansing properties!

Ground ginger: This herb will help make your bathroom smell amazing as you sink into the tub. Ginger supports a good night’s sleep, so this is the perfect addition to a nighttime bath.

Cardamom pods: Invigorate your senses with a spa-like experience, and improve circulation by adding this into your coconut milk bath.

How to Make Coconut Milk Bath

A metal bowl with flour, baking powder, and spices.
A bowl full of coconut flour and seeds on a wooden table.
A wooden spoon and a jar of flour on a wooden table.

Making a milk bath soak requires three steps which means it’s perfect after a long, busy day.

    1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the coconut milk powder, salt, flour, ginger, and cardamom.
    2. Mix well.
    3. Use this nourishing bath soak immediately in a warm bath or store for future use.

    Top Tips

Make sure that your coconut milk powder is free of clumps. If it is, use a wooden spoon to break apart the larger pieces so that it mixes well with the other ingredients.

Store extra bath soak in an airtight container in a cool dry place. Like this, it should last up to one year.

To use it: scoop ¼ of the mixture of milk bath into a bathtub under warm, running water.

Essential oils are easy add-ins if you love them, but are definitely not necessary with this soak. The cardamom and ginger give the most calming scent without any oils added.

To gift it: make multiple batches and portion it into small mason jars. Seal the glass jar and tie on a label with how to use the coconut milk bath as well as a little wooden spoon for scooping. You can gift this alone or as part of a larger self-care basket with items like easy yarrow salve and cinnamon sugar coffee scrub. You can throw in a few candles too!

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is coconut milk bath soak?

A coconut milk bath is a combination of coconut milk powder, Epsom salts, herbs, and oat flour. This medley leaves your skin feeling silky soft, smooth, and rejuvenated.

Do you rinse off after a milk bath?

There’s no need to rinse after a milk bath. Just step out of the tub and dry off with a towel as you normally would. Rinsing would wash off the milk bath before it has time to really soak into your skin. Since milk baths don’t leave the skin feeling sticky, there’s no need to rinse afterward.

What milk is best for a skin bath?

Each milk will have its unique benefits when it comes to a skin bath. However, cows’ milk, coconut milk powder, goats’ milk, and soy milk can all be used. Your choice will depend on any personal intolerances as well as preferences.
